Mark Hamill, Kathy Griffin, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and More Hollywood Reactions to President Biden’s Decision to Drop Out: ‘He Restored Honesty’ (2024)

President Biden’s decision to step down from the 2024 presidential campaign has elicited a wave of support from Hollywood. Familiar faces from Biden’s campaign trail resurfaced to show their agreement with the President’s decision and reinforce their support of the Democratic party.

Many were exceedingly vocal about their desire for him to step aside and let a younger candidate take over, including the host of “Pod Save America,” Jon Favreau, who recently called out Biden’s decision to white-knuckle it through the campaign with Jon Stewart.

After Biden made his announcement, former Obama speechwriter Favreau posted that the act was “courageous and selfless.”

“The President did what he’s done for the last four years – he listened to the American people and put the country’s interests ahead of his own.”

Actor, singer and director Barbra Streisand called Biden “a man who accomplished significant achievements” and wrote that we should be grateful for his upholding of our democracy.

Meanwhile, Cher has a couple of unorthodox ideas for the new ticket. Writing that she was “tortured” by the news, Cher posted, “Because I Don’t believe the Democrats can win the Presidency with ‘Pres Biden’ ‘Joe’ whom I’ve loved since we met in 2008. I campaigned for him I believe it’s time to pass the baton, time for dems to think ‘way’ outside the box. Maybe even a split ticket.”

Oscar-winner and Billie Eilish’s brother and song-writing collaborator Finneas posted a photo of his family standing with the President and wrote, “I see a person putting the people before themselves and their pride today, and for that, I have an enormous amount of respect.”

Kathy Griffin, who received copious backlash for many tweets and photo shoots deemed threatening to former President Trump, posted, “Let’s make history!!!! Finally”

“Abbott Elementary” actor Sheryl Lee Ralph posted a photo of the duo together to celebrate Biden’s endorsem*nt of Vice President Kamala Harris.

Former talk show host, comedian and actor Rosie O’Donnell posted Biden’s full letter on her Instagram account with the comment “thank u joe biden – lets goooooo !!!!!”

Actor Yvette Nicole Brown reinforced the need to support the Democratic ticket, writing, “Only the name on the top of our ticket has” changed.

Singer Lizzo posted a screenshot of the news with the comment, “We are truly living in unprecedented times.”

“The Bear” and “Borderlands” star Jamie Lee Curtis gives Harris a big thumbs up online writing, “She is trusted and tested and she is a fierce advocate for women’s rights and people of color and her message is one of hope and unity for America at her time of great national divide.”

Oscar-winner and director Spike Lee posted the same picture of Harris with the words, “Once again a sista comes to da rescue.”

Avenger, actor and activist Mark Ruffalo talks next steps and giving his followers the “marching orders.” “No to Trump/Vance. No to the right-wing Christian religious takeover for our nation. Nothing wrong with Christianity, just shouldn’t be running a nation birthed from freedom of religion.”

“Veep” star and Emmy-winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus (who played the Vice President turned President Selina Meyer) showed her support for Biden, thanking him for his service.

Creator of “Black Lady Sketch Show” and comedian Robin Thede endorsed Harris and made a pitch for Jon Stewart for the Vice President seat on her Instagram.

“Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” creator Shonda Rhimes thanked the President for his service.

Comedian Billy Eichner posted a photo with him and Biden and pushed for unity among the Democrats. “Now let’s unite because Donald Trump is a psychopath and a danger to our country and the entire world. As a wise man once shouted, LET’S GO LESBIANS, LET’S GO!!!!!!!!”

“Succession” and “Hacks” star J. Smith-Cameron retweeted the a request that the media now turn their attention to Trump’s mental health.

On Monday morning, Sally Field exclusively told Variety, “I am so grateful to Joe Biden for his extraordinary 54 years serving this country. The decision he made to step down is heroic and that of a great man. And, as a working woman, a mother and grandmother to a very diverse group, I support the candidacy of Vice President Kamala Harris with my whole 77-year-old heart.”
